Under The Skin, a film directed by Jonathan Glazer (Sexy Beast, Birth), starring Scarlett Johansson will be screening with a live performance of the score by a 25-piece orchestra on January 6th at the newly opened Regent Theater in Downtown Los Angeles, co-presented by Wordless Music and Spaceland Productions. Mica Levi composed the film’s original score and will be conducting the orchestra. Tickets go on sale November 19th. For more ticket info, visit here.
Levi, the 26-year old classically trained composer behind the score recently won Best Composer in the European Film Awards for her work on Under the Skin. Levi was also nominated for a British Independent Film Award in the Best Technical Achievement category and the original soundtrack continues to receive praise from the likes of Pitchfork, Variety, BlackBook , The Dissolve, Interview Magazine, The Guardian and many more. The orchestra players for this event were chosen from the critically acclaimed ensembles, wild Up and Wordless Orchestra.
Born in Guilford, the daughter of a record collector and a professional Cellist, Levi was playing a violin when she was barely old enough to hold one. Classically trained at the Purcell School on a scholarship from the Music and Ballet Scheme, she went on to win a scholarship to study composition at the Guildhall School of Music. Levi is also an artist in residence at London's Southbank Centre, the youngest individual musician to have ever been granted this unique role.
It’s no surprise that director Jonathan Glazer enlisted Levi to provide the score to Under the Skin. Johansson stars as a sinister figure preying upon hitchhikers in Scotland, the score itself is the perfect canvas for Glazer’s ominous cinematic brushstrokes. The score is a stunning compliment to the film, while the moving images similarly allow for the ebb and flow of the score to be recognized.
Johansson combs the highways in search of isolated or forsaken men, luring a succession of lost souls into an otherworldly lair. They are seduced, stripped of their humanity, and never heard from again. Based on the novel by Michel Faber (The Crimson Petal and the White), Under The Skin examines human experience from the perspective of an unforgettable heroine who grows too comfortable in her borrowed skin, until she is abducted into humanity with devastating results.
